National writers not showing El Pasoan John Skelton a lot of love as Cardinals’ QB
Comments on the Arizona Cardinals by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses):
ARIZONA CARDINALS (25)
John Skelton winning starting job does not solve quarterback problems.
Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 24) – Larry Fitzgerald is great WR in search of a quarterback. Can John Skelton be the guy?
Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 22) – Right decision to go with Skelton, defense must carry team early.
Bob Glauber (Newsday, 25) – John Skelton wins quarterback duel with Kevin Kolb, which means Cardinals’ $65 million QB starts season on bench. But Skelton is no Kurt Warner, so don’t be surprised to see Kolb down road.
Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 25) – Everything just right, except for QB and OL … which means everything is not OK.
Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 24) – John Skelton gets opportunity to bloom in desert while talented defensive front should provide some heat.
Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 25) – Decision to start John Skelton over Kevin Kolb may not be permanent one with the way tackles pass block. Defense solid and will hold own week in and week out, but that may not be enough.
John Lynch (Fox Sports, 27) – Coach Ken Whisenhunt and coordinator Ray Horton saw exciting young defense develop last year that should only get better. Problem is neither Skelton nor Kevin Kolb inspired belief at QB.
Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 26) – In “lesser-of-two-evils” quarterback competition, John Skelton emerged victorious over Kevin Kolb. Both were terrible and left tackle situation a mess, Cards have strong defense and likely improved running game with Ryan Williams’ return.
Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 26) – With John Skelton starting at QB, the Cardinals’ ceiling may be limited.
