EPISD interviews potential interim superintendent

Ken George was just named El Paso Independent School District’s temporary interim superintendent last week, but Tuesday the board began interviewing his potential replacements.

Terri Jordan stepped down last week, and Ken George temporarily took her place. The board said he would only be in that position a couple of weeks, and they held true to their word. Vern Butler was interviewed by the board for the interim position, recommended by Region 19 Executive Director Jimmy Vasquez.

Butler is currently working as program manager at Western Governors University and was an educational consultant to Region 11 and Region 19. In 2004 he worked as an interim superintendent and superintendent for Anthony Independent School District for three years. From 2001 to 2002 he was an interim superintendent for Ysleta Independent School District .

George said he’d be open to taking over, but EPISD Board President Isela Castanon-Williams said they were looking to hire outside the district. Castanon-Williamssaid she’s looking for an interim superintendent to fill the void until they can pinpoint the permanent EPISD superintendent.

The search for Dr. Lorenzo Garcia’s replacement has been on-going for over a year now, so ABC 7 asked Castanon-Williams how much this process is costing the district. She said it’s only costing them time, but said the search should end by next year.
