San Diego Padres renew player development deal with Triple-A team

On Friday, Sept. 28, the San Diego Padres issued the release below announcing the two-year renewal of their Player Development Contract (PDC) with the Tucson Padres. It is standard that PDC renewals are issued in either two or four year increments. This affiliation will transfer with the Minor League team upon relocation to El Paso for the 2014 season.

Earlier this year, the San Diego Padres Farm System was ranked the best in Major League Baseball according to ESPN Insider Keith Law (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove11/story/_/id/7547640/san-diego-padres-best-farm-system-baseball-mlb).

“We look forward to a great partnership with the San Diego Padres ownership, including Ron Fowler and the O’Malley and Seidler families. An affiliation with the San Diego Padres speaks volumes to the quality of play we will see in El Paso in 2014,” said Josh Hunt, a member of MountainStar Sports Group, along with his father Woody Hunt and Paul and Alejandra Foster. “For the first time, El Paso families will be able to watch players just one step from the Major Leagues, in a new state-of-the-art downtown ballpark right in our home town.”

PADRES EXTEND PLAYER DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT WITH TRIPLE-A TUCSON THROUGH THE 2014 SEASON

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres announced today that they have extended their Player Development Contract with the Triple-A Tucson Padres of the Pacific Coast League through the 2014 season. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

“We are glad to continue our relationship with Tucson,” said Byrnes. “Triple-A is an important level in the development of a player and we value Tucson as a critical part of our developmental process.”

The Tucson club recently wrapped up its second season as the Padres Triple-A affiliate. Including this season, San Diego has had a total of 18 players come through Tucson and make their Major League debut for the Padres.

“The Padres have been fortunate to have had a number of talented players come through Tucson over the last two years,” said Padres Vice President, Player Development and International Scouting Randy Smith. “We look forward to continuing to develop talented players to help the Major League team.”

With today’s announcement, the Padres have reached two-year extensions with each of their five minor league affiliates this year, including the Double-A San Antonio Missions, the Single-A Lake Elsinore Storm, the Single-A Fort Wayne TinCaps and the Single-A Eugene Emeralds.
