3 Bowie employees placed on administrative leave after investigation

(Nov. 2012 story)

El Paso Independent School District Interim Superintendent, Vernon Butler, released the statement below today following his decision to place two assistant principals and one guidance counselor from Bowie High School on paid administrative leave:

“Today, I have placed two administrators and one guidance counselor from Bowie High School on paid administrative leave, effective immediately.

“The EPISD employees placed on paid administrative leave are:

– Johnnie Vega, Assistant Principal (Bowie High School – August 2006 – present)
-Anna Luisa Kell, Assistant Principal (Bowie High School – February 2008 – present)
-Felipe Cobos, Counselor (Bowie High School – October 2008 – present)

“My decision to place these individuals on administrative leave is based on my preliminary assessment as EPISD Interim Superintendent of previously-disclosed internal audit reports, statements, and interviews that I have requested that warrant further review for possible violations of the State Educators’ Code of Conduct.

“As I have emphasized, much more work remains to be done to restore the public’s confidence, but I am committed to taking the necessary steps to help EPISD emerge from this tragedy as a stronger district that the community can be proud of once again.”
