Streets closed off in Kern area for safer trick-or-treat environment

In an effort to create a safer environment for trick-or-treaters on Halloween, the Kern Place Association obtained a special permit to close off the streets surrounding Madeline Park.

“In Kern, we have narrow streets so when cars would park on both sides and traffic was still trying to go both ways it got very dangerous for the kids trying to cross the street to get candy on the other side,” said Bob Halter, President of the Association. Residents who lived on the blocked streets were the only ones who were able to get through. Baltimore and Cincinnati streets were closed from the Southwest end of Madeline park all the way up to Piedmont from about 4 to 9pm Halloween night.

“You don’t have to worry about getting run over,” said one trick-or-treater. Kern is a popular place for trick-or-treaters from other parts of the city. On Wednesday, adjacent streets were lined with parked cars. Families drove there and then walked to the blocked areas. “The permit was $350.00.To close down the streets was another $50.00. The insurance was $400.00 and something, the barricades was another $375.00 so it was a big financial commitment on behalf of the Kern Place association,” said Halter.

The Association said they may consider blocking off the streets next year, depending on the feedback they get this year.
