Joaquin “El Chapo: Guzman’s effect in Juarez
Across Mexico – Chapo’s capture was front page news. In Juarez people could hardly Mexico’s most wanted cartel leader was in custody.
Via twitter Mexico’s President confirmed Joaquin Guzman’s capture in Mazatlan and congratulated Mexican forces. A senior US law enforcement official tells us it was a joint operation.
“I just saw it right now. I think it’s about time they caught him,” said Adolph Reza, El Paso resident.
Since his escape from a maximum security prison in 2001 Guzman has waged a bloody battle against rival cartels to control nearly every key smuggling route. Here In the border city Juarez alone the death toll: 10,000 people in the span of about five years.
Violence has decline sharply here in Juarez but now there are new concerns it could flare up again because there’s a power vacuum created by Chapos’ capture.
As this vender selling papers near the international bridge put it, let’s hope Chapo’s capture does not unleash the devil.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder described the arrest as “a landmark achievement, and a victory for the citizens of both Mexico and the United States.”
