Semi carrying hay goes up in flames

A big rig lost an axle, and went up in flames Saturday evening.

The semi was carrying a large load of hay along I-10 near Sunland Park Drive at around 6:21 p.m. when the truck’s axle and left rear wheel came off.

A spark from the axle ignited the hay, and lead to the fire.

When officials responded, large flames and heavy smoke were shooting up from the truck, officials said.

The hay caught fire on the underside of the semi, which was not fully enclosed, according to officials.

The West Valley Fire Department worked to tame the fire. It took crews over three hours to control the flames.

Seven El Paso Fire Department fire units and 19 firefighters responded to the incident.
