2012 story: USC quarterback Matt Barkley will not play in Sun Bowl due to injury

Lane Kiffin announced that Max Wittek will start at QB for USC in the Hyunday Sun Bowl, USC Athletics officials announced Thursday via Twitter.

The decision ends Barkley’s college career. Barkley suffered a shoulder injury and the decision to not allow him to play in the Sun Bowl was made by team doctors.

USC head coach Lane Kiffin said Barkley is obviously disappointed.

Barkley, using his personal Twitter account, tweeted that “Doctors haven’t cleared me to play, so I won’t be suiting up on Saturday. I’ll be here with my team to finish strong. Proud to be a Trojan!”

The Sun Bowl is scheduled for noon on Monday in El Paso, Texas.
