UTEP Softball Earns NCAA Academic Honor

UTEP’s softball program received the NCAA Public Recognition Award, based on the NCAA Division I 2012-13 Academic Progress Rates (APR) scores released Wednesday morning.

“The academic success of our student-athletes is a major priority and we are proud of the academic performance of these teams,” Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky said. “Our expectation is the academic progress rates will continue to rise.”

The softball program is a repeat selection from the 2011-12 academic year.

The award is given annually to programs whose APR score rates in the top-10 percent nationally by sport. The Miners’ effort in the classroom helped make it a successful day for C-USA members across with the board, with 24 teams being recognized.

The APR provides a real time look at a team’s academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
