Two Miners Make Appearance on C-USA All-Academic Team
Juniors Elphas Maiyo and Anthony Rotich were named to the Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic team as announced by the league office. The team featured 13 men and 11 women.
Twenty of the 24 honorees boast academic marks better than a 3.8 average, nine of which finished the academic year with a 4.0 grade point average.
Maiyo is one of the 20 honorees that sport a 3.8 GPA. The multidisciplinary studies major is a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. On the track, the distance runner posted a season-best and the second-top time (14:29.64) in C-USA in the 5,000m at the Texas A&M Invitational.
He went on to claim silver in the 5,000m at the C-USA Indoor Championships, helping the men claim C-USA Indoor Championship title. Overall, he registered four top-three finishes in the 2014 season, including a silver medal in the 10,000m run at the C-USA Outdoor Championships.
Also earning a spot on the all-academic squad is Rotich. The 2014 NCAA champion in the men’s mile holds a 3.32 GPA in multidisciplinary studies. The six-time All-American is a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.
The four-time C-USA Athlete of the Week enters this weekend’s NCAA preliminaries with the nation’s top time in the 3000-meter steeplechase. He won gold in that event, the 1,500-meter run and the 5,000-meter run at the C-USA Outdoor Championship.
