Miners Wrap Up NCAA West Preliminary
The UTEP track and field team concluded the final day of action at the NCAA West Preliminary Round adding two more individuals and a relay team to the NCAA Championship roster.
The women’s 4x100m relay was the first to seal a spot at the national meet for the Orange and Blue. The squad that consisted of Anna-Kay James, Janice Jackson, Aiyanna Stiverne, and Florence Uwakwe registered a season best of 44.53. The team placed second in the third heat and sixth overall.
Senior Janice Jackson continued her success as she finished first in the second heat of the 100m hurdles to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. The hurdler crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 12.98 sitting in fourth place in the west region.
Joining Jackson in the 100m hurdles at the national meet is Anna-Kay James. The junior transfer clocked in a season-best time of 13.40 placing 11th overall.
Freshman Cosmas Boit represented the Miners in the men’s 1,500m run but unfortunately fell short of making it to the nationals posting a time of 3:49.61 concluding the season with a 20th-place finish.
Wrapping up his collegiate career was Mark Jackson. Due to a hamstring injury earlier this week the All-American was unable to compete in the men’s triple jump.
Also falling short of the national meet were the men and women’s 4x400m relays teams.
The men’s team that consisted of A-Shawni Mitchell, Carnell Horn, Daniel Tarango and Abiola Onakoya recorded a time of 3:07.93 to finish 15th overall.
After qualifying in the 4x100m relay, James, Jackson, Stiverne, and Uwakwe looked to repeat their success in the 4x400m. Unfortunately the two-time Conference USA Champions placed 18th with a time of 3:39.98.
