Roswell school shooting suspect’s psych review complete

Prosecutors say the court-ordered psychiatric evaluation of a 12-year-old accused of shooting two classmates in New Mexico is complete.

Ninth Judicial District Attorney Matt Chandler said Friday that the boy has been transferred from an Albuquerque psychiatric facility to a juvenile center. Chandler says the boy faces a new charge of carrying a firearm on school premises. He’s already facing three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The seventh-grader is accused of taking a shotgun to Berrendo Middle School in Roswell and opening fire on classmates Jan. 14.

Two students were injured, including a boy who was critically wounded by a shot to the face. Chandler says he recently met with 12-year-old Nathaniel Tavarez, who remains hospitalized in Lubbock, Texas. He says the boy is doing well and looks forward to coming home.
