Despite loss Chihuahuas excited to play at home, Tuesday game near a sellout

After two weeks of playing on the road and living out of suitcases, the El Paso Chihuahuas finally played at ‘home’ Monday night.

It was the first time players practiced and played at Southwest University Park.

After a sellout Monday, Tuesday’s game is near selling out with tickets only available in the Big Dog House in right field.

Monday’s home opener was initiated with the singing of the National Anthem the flying of three vintage World War II planes over the ballpark.

The El Paso Chihuahuas honored the construction workers who helped get the ballpark ready for opening day.

Unfortunately, the Chihuahuas did not come out on the winning end against the Fresno Grizzlies, losing 2 to 1 in the 13th inning.

Despite the loss, it was a homecoming some players did not expect.

“We knew that everyone was excited to have us come here. Just seeing it for the first time with your own eyes, with a great park and everybody coming out, it was very exciting,” said second baseman, Brooks Conrad.

Conrad said he wants the same exciting energy through out the season.

“It makes all the difference when you come to the park with all that energy like that. You have a an extra pep in your step and more adrenaline,” said pitcher Jason Lane.

Game 2 of the Chihuahuas’ eight-game home stand begins at 6:35 a.m. at Southwest University Park.
