Home destroyed by fire in Socorro, family displaced

A family of four was forced out of their home after a fire erupted in the garage early Wednesday morning on the 9900 block of Laurie Jo Lane in Socorro.

Socorro’s police and fire departments were called to the scene at about 3:40 a.m.

A police officer told ABC-7 the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived. Emergency crews say high winds enabled the fire to get grow, but it did not spread to homes nearby.

Fire crews from El Paso, Horizon City and Clint were called out to assist.

No injuries were reported.

The residents of the home, a couple and their two daughters, were able to get out in time after the father smelled smoke and alerted his family. Their dog also made it out ok.

“I heard pops and thought it was gunfire,” said neighbor, Irvin Sandoval.

Sandoval said the homeowner banged on their door and told them to get out, the homes are only separated by a few feet.

The displaced family is getting help from Red Cross.

Fire officials on the scene said the fire started in the garage, completely destroyed two vehicles and spread to a majority of the home.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
