Joyce Wilson to step down as City Manager on May 20

El Paso’s first City Manager will step down at the end of the work day on Tuesday, May 20.

City Council will vote to approve hiring Tommy Gonzalez at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“Even though his contract is effective June 23, he will be on board, informally, immediately next week and a couple of days each week thereafter focusing on orientation with organization and community and City Council, as well as participating in the budget preparation since he will have to file the budget and oversee the summer process,” Wilson said in an email statement to media.

There’s also an item on Tuesday’s council agenda proposing to name Sean McGlynn the interim city manager, effective on May 21.

He’s currently a deputy city manager in charge of development and tourism.

Although she is stepping down Tuesday, Wilson wrote that she will “be available on a consulting and advisory basis as needed. I will have email and other city access but will remove myself from the group codes as everyone needs to transfer immediately to the new leadership team. I am confident Mr. Gonzalez will be pleased with the caliber of talent leading the City of El Paso.”
