May 2014 story: Crews resume construction Monday morning after two workers killed
Crews were back at work Monday morning at the site of the Spur 1966 construction where two of their own were killed.
More than a dozen workers gathered at about 6 a.m. shortly before they went about their duties.
Over the weekend they were supposed to complete the overpass that will connect Paisano Drive to the University of Texas at El Paso. That part of the construction project has been postponed.
PREVIOUS STORY: Two men are dead after a suspected drunk driver crashed into them while they were performing construction on I-10 East early Sunday morning, according to El Paso Police Department.
A Fort Bliss spokesman confirmed a soldier stationed at Fort Bliss was arrested by EPPD at the scene of the crash this morning, for allegedly hitting the two men. Fort Bliss is working with EPPD because the crash occurred off post.
The crash occurred at around 2:27 a.m. May 11. Special Traffic Investigators responded to the scene to assist Westside Patrol on a fatal crash that occurred within a construction zone on I-10 East near Schuster. At this time, investigators have learned that the driver of a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic disregarded a traffic barricade and struck the two men while they working.
One of the men died at the scene and the other was transported to an area hospital where he is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. ABC-7 learned Sunday afternoon that the second man who was transported to a hospital has died. Officers have taken the 18-year-old driver into custody and believe alcohol is a factor in this deadly crash.
Identities are being withheld at this time pending notification to next of kin as well as formal charges being filed against the 18-year-old driver.
