STEM Fiesta allows thousands of students to learn about academic, professional opportunities in STEM fields
More than 6,000 students from across El Paso visited the El Paso Convention Center to learn about academic and professional opportunities in STEM fields.
The mission of the STEM Fiesta is to inspire youths to pursue education and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
The students learned about these opportunities through competitions, presentations, and a whole set of interactive exhibits.
The exhibits included a robotics competition where 24 teams build and program robots against each other and gaming/IT competitions with students presenting their own game designs and much more.
Guest speakers also spoke to the students at the event, including Kim Majerus, vice president for state and local education at Cisco Systems.
Majerus said this event is important to help students learn and grow in these fields.
“It’s the methodology to which they learn, and it’s connecting the dots,” Majerus said. “This is all about connecting an individual’s mind to how the solutions are going to look in the future. It’s connectors and it’s baseline.”
Organizers also awarded 11 scholarships to UTEP and EPPC with hopes of the winners to pursue an education in a STEM discipline. More information about the local job market for stem careers along with a list of occupations and salaries in those fields is available here (insert link).
