UTEP students take a break from finals with midnight breakfast

With finals for UTEP students going on all this week, the university’s residence life office put together a special version of midnight breakfast for students.

Students were treated to breakfast specialties like bacon, potato and chorizo breakfast pizzas as well as staples like cereal, milk and orange juice. The event itself was held on the Undergraduate Learning Center patio, with the wind and chilly weather not deterring the over 1,000 students who showed up. A DJ spun tunes and kept the party moving. It’s all put on by the university’s Office of Residence Life and is meant to keep students going during finals.

“We have had, in the history of midnight breakfasts – it’s been around for twenty years now, a little over twenty years – we’ve only done it once outside,” said Kevin Marshburn, assistant director of Residence Life. “And that was more than ten years ago outside the library, and it was a very cold night like this. So we just decided to use one of the campus venues and decorate it a little bit, make it look a little lively, and wanted to have more people come over. Make it a real Midnight Break-festival, is what we tried to do.

All of this will be leading up to UTEP’S centennial commencement on Saturday in the Sun Bowl, which is expected to be one of the largest ever put on by the university. The ceremony itself will start at 7 p.m. in the stadium. With 2,700 graduates eligible for the 132nd commencement exercises, it’s the largest graduating class in UTEP’s 100-year history. Stadium gates will open at 5:30 p.m and there will be free parking and shuttle services beginning at 4:30 p.m.
