Hundreds of Las Crucens attend teenager’s funeral

Hundreds of Las Crucens gathered to say goodbye to Omar Sanchez, 19. Sanchez was found at the bottom of Caballo Lake a few weeks ago.

Family members said Sanchez was camping out there with friends when he disappeared.

Family members said they could tell how much Sanchez was loved after so many people packed Holy Cross Church where his funeral was held.

Family and friends wore purple ribbons with Sanchez’s photo. Purple balloons were tied to cars painted with messages honoring the teen. Pallbearers wore purple shirts.

It was all to honor Sanchez’s favorite team: the Baltimore Ravens.

Family members said they still remember Sanchez celebrating ecstatically when the team won the Super Bowl this year.

That’s what many who knew him were doing on Friday, remembering all the times he made them smile.

“Everybody loved him. He was an outgoing person. God’s got him with him. He’s taken him away from us but he’s up there, laughing at us, talking to us. But he’s a good nephew,” Sanchez’s aunt Rosario Ybarra said.

“Omar was the best kid I’ve ever grown up with. He was an angel to us. I can’t believe God took him away from us but he was a good guy. He’d do anything for anybody. I can’t believe he’s gone, I really can’t,” said Becky Gist, Sanchez’s aunt.

The family is still left without answers about what happened out at Caballo Lake.

New Mexico State Police said the autopsy was completed. They are waiting on toxicology results.
