Sunland Park Police say father accidentally ran over, killed son while trying to get heroin

June 11, 2014 afternoon update: Sunland Park Police say that 25-year-old Daniel Orozco was allegedly attempting to obtain heroin when he accidentally run over his 3-year-old son, Daniel Orozco Jr.

Detectives say that Orozco had prior knowledge that his son could unbuckle himself and get out of the car on his own.

Police say Orozco could not obtain heroin and left the area but did not check for the child in the vehicle before backing out.

After realizing he ran over his child, he and another subject drove to the police department for help.

Police began first aid and assistance was also rendered by Sunland Park Fire and AMR.

Daniel Jr. was the taken by helicopter University Medical Center in El Paso where he died at about 9:30 a.m.

Orozco is being charged with Child abuse resulting in Great Bodily harm injury or death. His bond has been set at $500,000 cash.
