Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ new album recorded mostly in Tornillo, Texas set for April release
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs enjoyed recording their 2009 album “It’s Blitz” at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas so much they recorded much of the followup, “Mosquito,” there.
“Mosquito” will be released on April 16.
According to Rolling Stone, the album features production from TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, Nick Launay and one track from LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy. “Mosquito” also includes a guest appearance from rapper Dr. Octagon, the extraterrestrial alter-ego of Kool Keith.The Yeah Yeah Yeahs recently debuted a few new tracks during a 70-minute set in Pomona, California, as the band geared up for an Australian tour.
Karen O told Rolling Stone that the band’s approach to Mosquito was more playful and lo-fi, with initial demos recorded in the band’s basement studio in Manhattan. “I think this record has more moodier and tripped-out songs than you’ve ever heard from us,” she said. “You might catch some roots reggae and minimalist psychedelia influences in there.”
Guitarist Nick Zinner had a guest DJ gig in El Paso, Texas in late December which featured hip hop, indie music and even 50s and 60s old school rock songs – some in Spanish. When asked by ABC-7 after his DJ set if his band would return to Tornillo to record again, Zinner said “f— yeah!”
Sonic Ranch has become a popular place for musicians to record in recent years. Beach House, Hanson, Band of Horses, and Connor Oberst are just some of the artists that have recorded there.
