Woman known as ‘candy lady’ has died from injuries in pedestrian accident

Angela Nava, known to patrons of bars and clubs as Angela or the “candy lady,” died Tuesday afternoon from injuries suffered over the weekend when she was hit by a truck.

She was 60 years old.

Dave Castillo, who started a fundraising effort for Nava and has been in contact with her family, including meeting them at the hospital Tuesday, confirmed Nava’s death with ABC-7. Police confirmed Nava’s death Wednesday morning.

An online fund set up on this past weekend to help pay Nava’s medical bills has been changed to a memorial fund to offset funeral expenses.

The memorial fund page also has a message posted Tuesday night from Nava’s family announcing her death and thanking the community its the support.

“A message from Angela’s family… Our beautiful Angela has left us for a much better world where there will be no more pain or suffering! Thank you for being there for her and loving her. We love each and every one of you more than words can ever say! God bless you guys!” reads the post from Nava’s family.

Nava was hit on Mesa Street and Missouri Avenue in Downtown around 10 p.m. Saturday.

The driver, 26-year-old Erik Torrijos of Ciudad Juarez, stayed on the scene and cooperated in the investigation. He was never taken into custody, and no charges are pending. Police say that alcohol was not a factor in the crash on the part of Torrijos.

Nava was well-known in bars and clubs for having snacks for sale but also a sweet demeanor and a radiant smile.

One of the places she frequented to sell snacks was in Pride Square in Downtown, where several gay bars are located.

Late Tuesday night, Epic Bar & Nightclub added a picture of Nava with the caption, “A great loss to us All! You will be missed!”

A benefit will be held for Nava on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Epic Bar & Nightclub, featuring Sun City Divas and performers. Doors open at 9 pm. with show starting at 11 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Angela Nava memorial fund.
