How the flu almost killed ABC-7’s Alec Schreck

Nearly 3,400 El Pasoans caught the flu this season and 15 of them died.

This season, ABC-7 reporter Alec Schreck, a young, active, and otherwise healthy man, was in the hospital for 37 days with the flu- on the brink of death.

“I’ve always been the kind of guy that never goes to the hospital,” Schreck said. “So I just thought ‘I won’t go.'”

It’s a story many have heard.

The tough guy mentality – “I’m alright. Everything will be okay.”

But, for reporter Schreck, that mentality nearly cost him his life.

“I was suffocating,” Schreck said. “It was probably one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced. It felt like someone was holding me under water and I was going to die”
