City of El Paso, Chihuahuas officials ask fans to plan ahead when parking for home games

The El Paso Chihuahuas and City officials have released information on parking and ballpark access on game days.

“The City’s Traffic Management Center is responsible for timing signals for Downtown ingress and egress,” according to a statement released by the Chihuahuas. “They, along with El Paso Police and Fire Departments, will handle intersection control and public safety. EPDOT and TXDOT will manage dynamic messaging on streets and Interstate 10. Using social media the Chihuahuas marketing officials will be able to push messaging from the Command Center to fans on their way to and from Downtown.”

Ted Marquez, director of the City of El Paso’s Dept. of Transportation, said “to avoid the congestion, look for parking that is not adjacent to the ballpark.

Marquez suggested parking a couple of blocks away so fans will have a better experience and get to know Downtown.

Marquez added that the stadium’s capacity is 9,000 and that they have around 4,500 parking spaces which he says can accommodate the demand.

The Walter P. Moore Study on Downtown parking and traffic circulation, which can be viewed at http://bit.ly/RsyQlV, reports that there are more than 6,200 public parking spaces within a six-block radius of Southwest University Park.

Chihuahuas officials are encouraging fans to check for updates to directions, routes, and parking on a regular basis.

An alternative to driving to the games is taking Sun Metro, which is offering round-trip Park+Ride Service for $3 (ages 5 and under are free) from five locations around town to Southwest University Park.

On April 28 (Opening Night), the Park+Ride Service will begin at 5:30p.m. Return trips will start at the beginning of the 7th inning, run again at the end of the 9th inning, and continue for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game.

Sun Metro will provide Park+Ride Service to the ballpark for the first seven home games, with departures starting about an hour and a half before game time. For the balance of the 2014 season, Park+Ride Service to Downtown will be provided for all Friday, Saturday and Sunday games.
