YISD audit finds irregularities
An audit finds problems with the Ysleta Independent School District’s credit recovery program. But the auditor says it wasn’t done on purpose.
The findings were announced during a board meeting Monday night.
The auditor — who works for YISD — said her team spent the last year reviewing the procedures students had to follow to recover credits.
The auditors studied six years of data from the district’s 11 high schools. While the team found some issues, there was no evidence of intentional manipulation to avoid federal or state accountability issues.
New YISD superintendent Dr. Xavier de la Torre chalked it up to a misinterpretation of what the state expects when school districts deal with international students.
“It was pretty clear that there’d been no directives, no deep conversations about how this might benefit the school district by excusing students from the assessment in the 10th grade,” Dr. de la Torre told ABC-7 Monday.
De la Torre said the district will work on creating a uniform credit recovery procedure. Currently, each high school administration comes up with its own guidelines.
