LCPS implements new lightning safety policy

Following the incident, the district has implemented a new lightning policy as a response to the terrifying incident.

Hunter Keffer, two of his teammates and their coach were seriously injured when they were struck by lightning in August.

Keffer was recently released from the hospital and was able to return to school Tuesday.

In light of the incident, the district has expanded it’s lightning safety protocol, putting more responsibility on coaches.

“I know it’s a rare occurrence, but it’s always good to be prepared,” Picacho Middle School parent, Stuart Donaldson said.

Donaldson is one of many parents relieved to hear that LCPS has implemented a new lightning safety policy.

Under the new guidelines, coaches will be required to monitor the weather more closely. If thunder or lightning is spotted overhead, students must immediately go indoors.

“When we know lightning is in the area, the New Mexico standards were 6-8 miles, from the New Mexico Activities Association. We’re going to increase that to 10 miles,” Jo Galvan, spokesperson for the Las Cruces Public Schools District, said.

Coaches will also be required to download an app called the ‘weather bug’ to track storms.

“”It’s so unpredictable, weather and that includes the border region when we have monsoons but we have to take as best precautions as we can,” Galvan aid.

The changes go into effect immediately.

“It’s just one of those unfortunate incidents, It’s good that they’re good that they’re taking steps to not let it happen again,” Donaldson said.

The district says it will do all it can to protect the kids safety.

“We can’t look under a crystal ball but we can be more vigilant on what we need to do,” Galvan said.
