Mariachi Barbie to be released this month
Mattel’s first Mexico Barbie, part of the Dolls of the World collection, last year didn’t go over so well.
The company was criticized for what people saw as a stereotypical portrayal of Mexican women with the doll dressed in a brightly colored dress and witha Chihuahua under her arm.
Mattel will release mariachi Barbie this month and so far, the reaction on social media seems to be positive.
“I am loving the new #Mexican Barbie, dressed in mariachi gear. I think it provides an opportunity to get kids interested in mariachi music, which is beautiful and popular in other countries as well. also, mariachis bands are usually male dominated so it’s nice to see Barbie in a traditionally male profession,” LadydeeLG wrote on her blog.
“The Dolls of the World collection features the native fashions, while celebrating the cultures and diversity represented within each country in a way that will appeal to Barbie fans of all ages,” General Manager of Mattel Mexico, Ana Paula Martinez de Alba, said in UK Daily Mail article about the doll.
Mattel’s description of the doll:
Dressed in the traditional costume of a mariachi, Barbie doll wears a fitted black bolero jacket and cropped trousers trimmed in intricate golden brocade that mirrors the pattern on her impressive, wide-brimmed sombrero. Flourishes include a brilliant pink tie, low ponytail and tall black boots.
