Two options for Oktoberfest in El Paso this year
This year there are two Oktoberfest events happening in El Paso. The Authentic Oktoberfest at the El Paso County Coliseum will be Sept. 12-14, and the Fort Bliss Morale, Welfare and Recreation Oktoberfest will be at Biggs Park Sept. 19-21.
“We think El Paso can handle two Oktoberfests,” MWR spokeswoman Michele Wiernicki said. “We’re looking forward to seeing a huge crowd next weekend to come out and enjoy what we think is a very authentic, Fort Bliss Oktoberfest.”
“We kept the authenticity of the Oktoberfest. We have Paulaner beer. We ordered our steins from Germany and had them shipped all the way over here., which wasn’t the cheapest way to do it, but kept it authentic,” El Paso Sports Commission President Brian Kennedy said.
For those looking for German food, drink and music, look no further than the El Paso County Coliseum this weekend, and Fort Bliss’s Biggs Park next weekend. Both are hosting Oktoberfests, in similar fashion, on different dates.
“We decided to continue the event rather than let it die out with the mass exodus of our German partners,” Wiernicki said.
The German Airforce left Fort Bliss; however, talks with the El Paso Sports Commission to host the festival at the coliseum had been going on for years. Both events will technically be the firsts because they have different hosts and different locations. Organizers say there will be similarities for those who attend.
Fort Bliss’s Oktoberfest will feature Schuhplattler German dancers and Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer. The coliseum’s Oktoberfest promises everything to be authentic, from the steins shipped to El Paso from Germany to the Paulaner beer being served.
So regardless if you end up and one, or both, it’s bound to be weekends the whole family can enjoy. Both Oktoberfests offer free admission for everyone on Sundays.
