Former UTEP head coach Jason Rabedeaux dead at age 49

Jason Rabedeaux, who succeeded Don Haskins as head coach at UTEP, has died.

He was 49.

Rabedeaux had an accident in his home in Ho Chih Min City, Vietnam and could not be revived, according to a news release by his team, the Saigon Heat.

“Coach Rabs was well known for his passion for getting the best out of his players and always putting the development of basketball in Vietnam as his number one priority since arriving in the country in 2012. The ABl would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to Coach Rabs, his children and the whole Rabedeaux family during this tough time. Coach Rabs will always be remembered by everyone in the ABL,” the ASEAN Basketball League said in a news release.

He coached Saigon since 2012.

Rabedeaux wad hired by UTEP to coach the men’s basketball team in 1999 after Hall of Fame coach Haskins retired.

He was named Sporting News and Houston Chronicle Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2001.

He resigned from UTEP in Oct. 2002 citing personal reasons.
