Socorro ISD administrators train with FEMA on emergency response plans
Twelve Socorro Independent School District administrators are in Emmitsburg, Maryland receiving emergency response training from FEMA.
The training includes evaluating the district’s plans for emergencies, such as active-shooter scenarios, severe weather and identifying infectious diseases.
“We’re looking at our emergency operation plan and looking at ways we can make it better,” said Marivel Macias, SISD Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services.
Deputy Chief Rafael Reyes, Emergency Management Coordinator in El Paso’s City and County Emergency Management Department, and Carlos Carmona, District Coordinator with the Texas Division of Emergency Management in the Texas Department of Public Safety, are attending the training with the SISD administrators.
Macias said FEMA officials are working with SISD and another school district from Idaho to ensure the districts protocols are effective in keeping students safe.
The district officials are staying in a training facility and their airfare will be reimbursed by the federal agency, said Daniel Escobar, a District Spokesman.
