Recount in Northeast City Rep. runoff race to take place this week
The race for Northeast City Representative isn’t quite over. There will be a recount in the June 15 election incumbent Carl Robinson won.
“Well, I have been informed that Sam Morgan has filed for a recount,” Robinson posted on his Facebook page Monday afternoon. “It will be Thursday or Friday. Thank you for your continued to support. We have one more step in our race before City Council canvasses the race.”
Robinson won the District 4 race on June 15 by 22 votes.
“After spending a day relaxing after the election I wanted to make sure I do my due diligence with the margin of error this close,” Morgan told ABC-7. “I am doing this with a difference of (22) votes. Texas law says if the margin is within 10 percent there can be a recount. In this case it is .38 percent – less than half of one percent. Right now the canvassing of the votes is not done and they have five days from election day to finish it. Everything is unofficial right now. We need to make sure they are on point. There shouldn’t be a deviation of one vote. They could still be waiting for absentee votes. I want to make sure they (the voters) have gotten who they vote for. If it’s Mr. Robinson, so be it.”
City Municipal Clerk Richarda Momsen said Morgan filed the petition Monday and paid a deposit of $2,100 dollars for the recount. It’s $100 per precinct (20 precincts in District 4) and another $100 for the early votes.
Momsen expects to finish canvassing all the votes by Thursday evening and Morgan’s recount would occur on Friday at El Paso County election headquarters. The recount is expected to take one day.
Morgan said it is his understanding that he and two representatives will be allowed to witness the recount and he is planning on being there.
