Transformer explosion closes Chase Tower Building; expected to reopen at 7 a.m. Friday

Chase Tower Building in downtown El Paso (201 E. Main) was evacuated Thursday afternoon following an explosion caused by the El Paso Electric Company’s main transformer feed into the building.

About 500 people were evacauted. No injuries were reported.

Jamie Gallagher, senior vice president of Borderplex Community Trust, which owns the office tower, said t he building remained closed while the El Paso Electric Company work crews made repairs to their equipment.

The Chase Tower will reopen at 7 am on Friday, Sept. 13.
