UTEP football player arrested in connection with early morning fight in West El Paso

UPDATE: The case against Richard Spencer was dismissed in May 2015 due to the successful completion of a Pre-Trial Diversion Program.

A UTEP football player was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly being involved in a a fight.

El Paso Police arrested and charged 21-year-old Richard Spencer, of the 300 block of Shadow Mountain, after an alleged assault at 2:05 a.m. at the intersection of N. Mesa and Cincinnati.

According to police, Spencer and others were engaged in a physical altercation outside one of the bars in the area and during the fight Spencer allegedly pushed a 22-year-old woman in the shoulder and up against a white truck, causing her injury.

Police also said that during the investigation Spencer began to walk away from the officers and crossed Mesa St., after being told to stop by the officers.

Spencer was caught by the officers and placed under arrest for Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Evading Arrest/Detention. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a bond of $1,500.00.

"We are in the information-gathering stage right now and will take the appropriate disciplinary action when we have all the details," UTEP football coach Sean Kugler said in a statement.
