Bus Driver Honored For Saving Boy

It was about 5:30 a.m. and the temperature was below freezing. That’s when a Sun Metro driver spotted a boy, 5, alone and barefoot, walking near Mesa and Mesa Hills on the West Side.

The bus driver, Michael Christmas, stopped to pick up the boy and call police. Tuesday, El Paso city council recognized the driver for his act of kindness.

“I’m glad I was at the right place at the right time,” said Christmas accepting an award with humility, “It was a little boy who needed help and I was glad I was there to help him and get him to a safe place.”

Christmas, a Sun Metro driver of six year, is also a U.S. Army veteran. He says any person in need of help can turn to a Sun Metro bus for help.

When the boy was found in early November, Police told ABC-7 he lived in a nearby apartment. He was reportedly home alone while his mother was at work.

Police did not file charges, but the case was turned over to Child Protective Services.
