Officials: Man arrested after leading deputies on high-speed chase, crashing into home

Doa Ana County Sheriff’s Office

A man who led Dona Ana County sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase that ended with a vehicle crashing into a home was arrested Thursday.

A deputy witnessed 24-year-old Erick Vasquez driving on the wrong side of McNutt Road Thursday morning and tried to stop him, according to officials. Vasquez did not stop, officials said.

Instead, a pursuit took place, where vehicles reached speeds of more than 110 mph.

Officials said the chase came to a halt at McNutt and Country Club roads when Vasquez crashed his vehicle into a home and trailer.

The collision caused damage to the home and trailer, as well as the vehicle.

After the collision, Vasquez made another attempt to run on foot, official said.

Vasquez reportedly climbed onto the roof of one of the structures he crashed into, but deputies talked him into coming down.

Vasquez was taken into custody.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office indicated investigators smelled alcohol on Vasquez. He refused chemical testing, but a field sobriety test was conducted.

Vasquez was charged with aggravated DWI, criminal damage to property, resisting or obstructing arrest, driving on a suspended license and failure to provide insurance.

His surety bond was set at $5,000 after he was booked in the Dona Ana County Detention Center.

Another person, Vasquez’s passenger, was taken an El Paso hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
