Program to help students reach full potential in class, home

The Clint Independent School District is using baseball and softball to help some students realize their own potential.

The “Base Play” program is aimed at students from disadvantaged neighborhoods in the Clint ISD.

Montana Vista Elementary School, located in far east El Paso County, is one of three CISD schools using sports to teach students discipline and dedication they can also use at home and in the classroom.

Coach Benjamin Triste told ABC-7 teachers have told him the lessons on the playing field are making a difference.

“The focus of this program is to get the students involved and getting them working together as one team,” said Coach Triste.

For many students, this is the first time they are exposed to baseball or softball.
The boys and girls practice three times a week after school to prepare for Saturday morning games at the Clint Junior High School baseball field.

“I made four homeruns in the first game,” said Brianna Torres, a fourth grader at Montana Vista Elementary.

“You get to play with other people and it’s fun,” said Marlon Galindo, who plays shortstop for his team.

The “Base Play” program is provided by the clint school district at no cost and games are held every Saturday at 9 a.m.
