Toll lane violators beware
The regional Mobility Authority set up the toll lanes along the Cesar Chavez Highway to make for an efficient way to get to work.
The price for using the toll lane runs under $2.
You can set up an account online, or pay through phone or mail.
Toll lanes are also equipped with cameras that take pictures of license plates.
If you don’t have an account a bill will be sent to your home. If you don’t pay the bill, you’ll be sent three notices. If you ignore the notices the RMA says you will still have a price to pay.
“Essentially it goes into collections, the collection company will try to collect. If that doesn’t work then we take it to the courts, we are opting to go to municipal courts here, said RMA Executive Director Raymond Telles.
But what about out-state-drivers? Can they get away with not paying for using toll lanes?
The RMA says no.
“In the United States, Texas has co-operation with other states so that toll violators in other states can be tracked down. So we have the ability to deal with other U.S. state violators,” said Telles.
“We’re partnering with the police department and the international bridge division to buy equipment that we can install at the international bridges so that when we have a list of habitual toll violators from Mexico that list will be uploaded and at that point the police will be flagged that there is a toll violator at the bridge,” said Telles.
The RMA is also working with the state, aiming to eventually work out a plan where if you haven’t paid your fees you might not be able to register your vehicle.
