City hears residents complaints about closure of Country Club Road

Tensions are brewing over the complete closure of Country Club Road. Beginning next Monday, Country Club will be completely closed from Doniphan to Love Road.

Country club road is currently down to one lane as crews replace old water and sewage lines.

At a meeting Monday night, city representatives Cortney Niland and Ann Morgan Lilly tried to calm residents who tell ABC-7, it takes 20 minutes to travel just half-a-mile.

Reconstruction of Country Club Road began this August. It was meant to replace the aging water and wastewater lines. But it was just discovered, to the city’s surprise, that AT&T phone lines were buried under the road.

The city says to work around the lines, the complete closure of county club road is necessary.

“The roads are dug up now,” said Lilly. “We didn’t know those AT&T lines were there. They said we did, but yesterday we found out they really didn’t. And it’s just always one big surprise out here. They didn’t know there was a concrete road that was put there in 1940. So everything out here has been one big surprise. We’re working as hard as we can to get it finished.”

Motorists who use Country Club Road are reminded to use the following detours routes rather than cutting through residential neighborhoods: Eastbound thru-traffic detour:

Take McNutt Road southbound to Sunland Park Drive eastbound to Doniphan Drive or Interstate 10.

Westbound thru-traffic detour: Take Interstate 10 or Doniphan Drive to Artcraft Road westbound to McNutt Road southbound.

Local traffic detour: Follow posted signage and instructions from construction crews.
