Officer Darren Wilson resigns due to Ferguson case
Darren Wilson will not receive any further pay or benefits after resigning from the Ferguson, Missouri Police Force.
The city’s Mayor, James Knowles, made the announcement Sunday.
“There is no severance agreement with officer Wilson and the city of Ferguson,” Knowles said. “The city of Ferguson will not be making severance payment to officer Wilson. Now is the time for the city of Ferguson to begin its healing process with the citizens of Ferguson and the police department. We truly understand the past three months have been very difficult for everyone involved.”
Wilson submitted his resignation letter Saturday, just five days after a grand jury decided not to indict him in the killing of Michael Brown.
Wilson told the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch he did not want to put any residents or the other police officers at risk by remaining on the force.
During the news conference the mayor announced steps to improve law enforcement relations in the city, including a plan to hire more minorities in the police department and the creation of a task force to review police policies.
Wilson had been a part of the force since 2011 and had been receiving numerous death threats ever since the trial began.
It has been nearly four months since the unrest and riots have began in Ferguson, Missouri.
