Southwest University Community Champions: Hanks Silver Knights Marching Band

El Paso,Tx-The Hanks Silver Knights marching band brought home some hardware from the NMSU Tournament of Bands.

They put a lot of blood, sweat and tears throughout the season and that is why they are ABC-7’s Southwest University Community Champions.

Jordan Thummel is a senior at Hanks high school she says “it just really comes down to the little things, whether or not you win or get second,It’s not about winning it’s about being awesome and having fun”

The Tournament of Bands is a big deal about 30 schools compete along side of some of the best bands and this year Hanks high school took first place in the competition.

Mady Fanning tells ABC-7 ” It gets pretty competitive especially after finals”.
Fanning explains that being apart of the band teaches students how to grow.

” It doesn’t teach you just about music, it teaches you how to be a better person and be responsible and be on time It teaches you to be on time it makes you really responsible and independent”

The program incorporates different elements such as jazz the Assistant Band Director Doug Brown says it allows all of the students to work as a team
they have participated in four competitions this year and they have been successful during each competition.

“It’s a lot of things they’ll need to know as an adult It’s a great lesson for them going forward..it’s more than just music”.
