Eastlake High School graduation ceremonies mark milestone
This weekend thousands of high school seniors will enter a new chapter in their lives.
Schools from several districts will be hosting their graduation ceremonies.
But for one class of 2014 the ceremony marks a special moment for seniors and the school.
Eastlake High School opened in 2010.
Friday evening the school graduated its first class.
Students and staff spoke with ABC-7 about what made these 4 years special.
“How may of you have already posted about 5 to 10 selfies on Facebook today?,” said SISD Super Intendant Dr. jose Espinoza tells the Eastlake class of 2014 they should be posting pictures of themselves on Facebook.
Over the sea of purple graduation caps he tells the students it’s a momentous occasion and gives them words of support.
“I see so much potential in all of you, you are tomorrow’s leaders,” said Espinoza.
Espinoza also tells some nervous students they should be proud because they have already been leaders.
Principle Gilbert Martinez has been at the school since it opened and explains how being a first class is different for students.
“Coming to 2014 the students senior year, they built the school, they created our culture,” said Martinez.
“I can tell you there was not much building to go through, it was just one solid building but that’s not what’s important, what’s important is that we didn’t have upper class men. We had to teach ourselves what tradition is what we makes us falcons, we were setting that bar,” said senior class valedictorian Andres Reyes.
“It’s very sad to see them go because I won’t see them as much but I know that they are going on to bigger and better things,” said Reyes.
They are going to be great wherever they go and they will always be welcomed at Eastlake,” said Martinez.
It was an adventure they went through together and today wasn’t a goodbye but rather a see you later:
“It’s bitter sweet but our 10 year reunion is going to be awesome,” said one graduate.
