Las Cruces Mother Charged In Infant Daughter’s Death

Police arrested a mother for allegedly abusing her child to death, according to a police spokesman.

Annette Smith, 33, is charged with a first-degree felony count of Intentional Child Abuse along with a third-degree felony for Tampering with Evidence.

The victim, a seven-month old child, died Wednesday, July 9th. According to police. EMS Crews were called out the home because the child was having trouble breathing.

Crews took the infant to Memorial Medical Center, where she later died.

Smith was charged after investigators learned the child was living in poor conditions. Police say the air conditioner in Smith’s apartment was not working.

Smith would allegedly cover the baby with multiple layers of blankets to avoid hearing her cry, according to investigators.

The state of New Mexico has since taken over custody of Smith’s three other children.

Smith is jailed at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
