Former EPISD Administrator Learns Punishment for Role in Cheating Scandal

Five years probation and a $5,000 fine. That is the punishment handed down by a federal judge against former EPISD administrator Myrna Gamboa.

Gamboa pleaded guilty to charges she conspired with former superintendent, Lorenzo Garcia, to inflate the district’s state and federal accountability scores.

The scheme made it seem like campuses in the Priority School Division met “No Child Left Behind” standards in order to qualify for federal funding.

Gamboa created false demographics reports, made at-risk students withdraw from school, discouraged them from enrolling, denied and deleted credits to students from foreign countries, and reclassified 10th grade students so they could avoid state-mandated tests.

Gamboa will not have to do any community service and will not have to wear monitoring devices during her probation period.
