New Fire Station 5 to open today

It’s been over a year in the making, but the brand new Fire Station 5 will be officially opening later today.

The ribbon cutting and open house will give residents a look inside the new consolidated station.

The station was built with a budget of $4.2 million with an expected completion date of November. Fire crews did begin moving in equipment and testing operations last month.

This new station located at 400 Revere St. right off Gateway East is meant to replace two other stations in the area: the old Fire Station 5 at 4240 Alameda and Fire Station 13 at 5415 Trowbridge.

It includes larger living and dining facilities to house more firefighters. Fire officials have said that the move will improve response times.
