Triple-A baseball parking could demand triple parking fees near stadium

City council members will consider raising the parking-meter rate for meters nearest the ballpark on Tuesday.

The proposed ordinance wasn’t popular with drivers ABC-7 spoke with on Wednesday.

The proposed hike would increase the rate drivers pay at the meters close to the ballpark from 75-cents an hour to $2.50 an hour.

A City-commissioned study from 2013 showed there are more than 12,000 places to park in downtown: private, public and metered.

The furthest places identified are about 16 blocks from the ballpark in the Segundo Barrio.

The City will be installing more parking meters around Union Plaza.

The proposal to be considered on Tuesday would also extend the hours that parking meters must be paid, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., to the proposed 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

It would also do away with free parking on Saturday. Sunday would be the only day drivers would not have to pay the meters in downtown should the proposal pass.
