Sun Metro Upgrading Mesa Corridor
The El Paso City Council decided to give the Rapid Transit System a try back in 2009. The goal was to provide less-expensive high-quality transit service.
For eleven in-and-out-bound stops on Mesa, there will be select RTS buses that offer:
– Service every 10-15 minutes with fewer stops.
-Signal prioritization so the buses can shorten red or lengthen green traffic lights
– Pre-paid automatic ticket vending machines
– Real-time arrival information
The actual bus stops will be modified to provide:
– A raised platform
– Wind and sun screens
– Wi-Fi, which will also be offered inside the bus
– Tree landscaping, along with public art
Sun Metro says it hopes to eventually expand RTS to the Alameda, Montana and Dyer corridor.
The project will cost about $27 million and $13 million will be paid for by the federal government. The rest will come from grants and city funds.
Sun Metro estimates lane closures will be on and off throughout the year until its complete in July 2014.
