May 1 Update: Investigation continues in officer-involved shooting death that led to man’s death

A police officer shot and killed Erick Salas Sanchez, 22 Wednesday night after investigators say Sanchez attacked officers. Sanchez is a Mexican citizen and the Mexican government is asking the El Paso District Attorney for a full investigation of the shooting.

Police said the officer shot and killed Erick Salas Sanchez while responding to a burglary call.

They say when they arrived Sanchez was holding a metal object. Officials said the officer initially shot Sanchez with his Taser but it had no effect.

Police say that’s when Sanchez charged at them.

“He threatened the officer and the officer had to discharge his weapon,” said police spokesman, Chris Mears.

ABC-7 asked police on Friday how many times Sanchez was shot and have not received a response.

ABC-7 went to the home on Friday where the shooting happened and spotted evidence tape on the garage and windows.

Neighbors say they heard several shots the night of the shooting.

A neighbor told ABC-7 he believes the man shot and killed did live in the home aired in the video.

ABC-7 asked police if there was any new information available and they said, “No” and they “must allow the investigation to move forward,” said spokesman Mike Baranyay

The officer involved is currently on administrative leave.

The case will be presented to a grand jury which is standard procedure anytime an officer is involved in a shooting.
