An El Paso native is in the running to be on the sidelines of every Dallas Cowboys football game.
Eastwood High School grad Janae Green is competing for a spot on the world Cowboys cheerleading squad.
“Dance gives me the ability to perform and that is just way more important to me,” Green said. “Whether it’s 2,000 or two people, I love to be able to perform and feel the music. “
Green has a chance to dance for a live audience of more than 100,000 at AT&T Stadium – and millions on national TV as a finalist for the “fan vote” into the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading camp.
“I started watching them and love that they’re considered America’s sweethearts and just want the opportunity to throw myself out there and try it out,” Green told ABC-7.
She is graduating from the University of North Texas next week with a degree in communications but she has a vision of dancing professionally.
“I knew I always wanted to continue to perform and continue dance and the Cowboys seemed like the perfect fit,” said Green.
“The entire family is very nervous but we’re happy for her,” Green’s mother, Alisha White told ABC-7. “This has been a dream of hers, she’s been dancing since she was 4 years old.”
And did she ever love to dance.
She started out with ballet but it just wasn’t enough for her, so her parents moved her to tap.
“She had so much energy,” White said.
From tap she went onto jazz and hip hop dancing.
Her mom has been rallying support here in El Paso, urging family, friends and coworkers to vote daily.
“I think it will be the payoff. All those days I sat at the dance studio waiting for her,” White said with a laugh.
White isn’t crazy about the reported low salaries for the cheerleaders.
“As parents we are concerned,” White said. “We weren’t in agreement at first. We wanted to make sure she had her education.
“We’d like for Janae to represent El Paso,” White said. “This would give us an opportunity to shine and for them to see what El Paso is all about.
Green agrees.
“I am grateful for votes. Every single vote counts. I would be honored to represent El Paso,” Green said.
Voting ends Saturday.
