2 teens killed in Lower Valley car wreck, surviving passenger flown to Lubbock because of burns
Two El Paso teens were killed when their vehicle crashed and caught fire.
The crash happened at about 9:44 p.m. Sunday, May 10 in the 600 block of South Zaragoza.
Police say that a 2003 BMW was traveling southbound on Zaragoza when the driver lost control of the vehicle, striking a guard rail and launching the vehicle over a drainage canal and rolled over.
The BMW then caught fire.
Two of the occupants, the driver and one passenger, were able to get out of the vehicle but two other passsengers – an 18-year-old male and 17-year-old male were unable to get out and died from the fire.
The passengers killed in the crash have been tentatively identified by investigator but their identities are being withheld pending confirmation and to ensure proper notifications have been made to their families.
The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering at a local hospital. The surviving passenger sustained significant burns throughout his body and has been flown to Lubbock for treatment.
These are the 19th and 20th traffic related deaths of 2015 compared to 17 at this time in 2014. The case remains an ongoing investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
