And they’ve been overturned completely.” former congressman patrick murphy describes the scene on the train. sot Murphy “human nature kicks in. peopl don’t care about anyone. they walked off the train. stepping over people. next to me was unconscious so i kind of slapped him a little bit and got him up. he was okay.” still an active scene, helicopters overhead. the national transportation safety board is sending a team here to see what went wrong. lana zak, abc news, philadelphia. happening today– beloved priest– father harold rahm, is returning to the is returning to the neighborhood he helped shape 50 years ago. and this week he’ll be honored for all his work. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with more… denise? one of those recognitions uncludes the unveiling of this new mural here in segundo barrio. 96-year old jesuit priest fr. harold rahm served el paso’s segundo barrio just 12 years – from 1952 to 1964. but his influence is still felt decades later. within his first year, he established a youth center, an outreach program targeting low-income youth. fr. rahm’s main goal was to get kids away from gang fighting and into school and other activities. now, 51 years later, he will receive the first-ever ‘segundo barrio person of the year’ award. the father is currently living in brazil may 13: 9:30 a.m. welcome fr. rahm at el paso international airport may 14: 6 p.m dinner at camino welcome fr. rahm at el paso international airport may 14: 6 p.m dinner at camino real hotel may 16: 9 a.m. bicycle parade and mural unveiling at sacred heart church may 17: 2 p.m. mass at sacred heart over the last 50 years, father rahm used similar techniques to reach out to poor neighborhoods in brazil. fr. rahm spends his days directing “christian yoga retreats aimed at helping people use their senses and meditation to form a union with god. the body found in a canal in west el paso yesterday has yet to be identified. the discovery was made on the 500 block of sunland park. police say foul play is not suspected. no other details are being released at this time. to our new mexico mobile newsroom now… the father and son involved in a deadly shooting inside a retirement home in las cruces — have been identified. it happened monday morning at “the village at northrise” police say 89-year- old carl fredrick harlan shot and killed his 65-year old son, carl tracy harlan. the father also allegedly took one of his fellow residents hostage. when police arrived — they say harlan threatened the officers with a gun, and one of the officers shot him in the hand. the las cruces police Chief says incidents like this should spark action: “i think that should be a wak up call to these retirement homes. These private institutions that have elderly populations there, they need to wake up and be ready to do more for their residents. ” residents abc-7 spoke with disagree, saying the facility is a very safe place. charges against harlan are pending. also from our new mexico mobile news room… we are getting a clearer picture of how las cruces public schools plans to move forward with millions in budget cuts next school year. and it’s not a pretty picture. the district’s proposal includes across the board 3- day unpaid furloughs for all employees. that alone is expected to save lcps more than 2-million dollars. other proposals include increasing the high school teacher-student ratio to 19-1 from the current 16-1. cutting 5 positions through attrition and retirement, and 300-thousand dollars in transportation cuts. totalling up to 7-point-6 million in cuts: “the good news here is that i do not project any layoffs or any firings because of this. No reductions in force, they call it riffing. We believe we’ll be able to do this through our normal attrition rates.” the principals from onate, mayfield and las cruces high schools are expecting to have to cut 31 positions next year. it will be voted on by the school board may 26th before being sent to the state’s public education department three days later. texas high school students can still graduate despite failing two state exams — thanks to the new bill signed by governor greg abbott. abbott says the state must protect students from the evolving testing standards. the bill offers an immediate path to graduation for 28- thousand seniors who failed one or two of the five exams required to graduate. cg gfx here’s the impact on borderland school districts. in the el paso i-s-d 350 students will be affected 132 students in the ysleta district. 270 in socorro. 21 students in canutillo i-s-d.
